So you have found yourselves drowning in unpaid bills, credit card nightmares, and you don't know how to get out. There is a simple solution but it takes time to apply it. It is not too difficult a concept to grasp but it is very hard for people to understand--IF YOU CANNOT AFFORD TO PAY CASH FOR IT---DON'T BUY IT! There is so many ways to apply this principle but you have to really think about where all of your money is going. When you get your paycheck, where does it go? I think the best way you can figure this out is take a week and write down every time you pull money out of your pocket; it doesn't matter if it's for a can of soda or gum, write down every transaction that you make in a given week. Another good way to put more money in your pocket is to stop smoking, the revenue you can save from not paying 5-6 dollars a pack is tremendous. A few years back I took the money I was going to spend on cigarettes and put it into a savings account and by the end of one year I had enough for a decent car. Going out all the time, stopping at the bar for 6 or 7 it all adds up and it's defeating your purpose--BUDGET your factors carefully, from the smallest to the largest and after you have looked at your list--SIMPLIFY! The next week after your analysis of your list, ask yourself "Is this a necessity? or a luxury?" Necessities are essential to get handled first--however, you are allowed to treat yourself once in awhile. This may make no sense to a credit card, easy pay options, buy no-pay later generation but you have to realize that if you buy something on credit and only make minimum payments it takes two-three times as much money to buy it. You should be finding a good deal, paying cash for it, and releasing yourself from the INTEREST prison. Some cards are 28% interest and since everyone is using credit and debit cards instead of carrying cash; that adds up to major usage fees. The cards are charged for every little thing you do--access fees, POS (Point of Sale) transactions, ATM fees, Member fees, ADD money to your card fees, the list is endless. I personally use a prepaid debit card--I pay a few bucks to load cash on it and then have the same ability to purchase online or use like a credit card; however, I can only spend what I put on it myself. They are not attached to bank accounts, they are based on loading them with your own cash, (think prepaid cell phones), there are many benefits to these cards. You are able to shop online, you are able to rent cars, hotels, etc. You are able to go to a local area near you and load your card with cash for a small fee; i generally pay $3.95 per load; or if you want to go all out you can direct deposit your paycheck on the card for no fees. Your money is available within a few hours and with ONLINE bill pay--you can pay almost anyone or any company you deal with on a regular basis. Another advantage is IDENTITY THEFT is minimized because even if they get your card and pin number they can only get what is on the card. I also use my card to store cash for monthly fees for companies like NETFLIX, EBAY, GAMEFLY etc. It also makes a great place to store money; some cards even pay interest like a savings account. There is some great places online to save money--safe and gaining good interest as well, my favorite is ING direct as well as online stock places like SHAREBUILDER. So now that you have some options to get more use out of your money the next step is the simplification. You need to think about where your money goes, what you can completely cut out, and what you can live without for a while. As you begin to cut out some stuff that you can survive without your finances will improve. I personally will take all of my credit debt and transfer it to one card--that makes one credit card payment not 57 seperate ones; lets face it guys gas is not getting any cheaper, groceries are not getting any cheaper, utilities bills are skyrocketing, the factor is you. If you can get your money to work for you that is the key. If you don't own and operate a small business, get into one--the tax advantages are enormous. That will be for another article though. Anything that is not making you money should be considered a liability, if you do not control your stuff your stuff controls you. The mini storage business is booming because people have so much stuff their place can't contain it. Lucrative at 25-75 dollars a month to rent an empty 10 by 10 room, you bet! The bottom line is this--MONEY IS A VEHICLE, IT CAN TAKE YOU WHERE YOU WANT TO GO BUT IF YOU CONTROL IT, IT CAN NOT CONTROL YOU. My final point in this diatribe is GIVE!!!!, when you give to others it somehow comes back to you, in order for this exchange to occur you have to give. Your house or apartment is filled with things just gathering dust, someone else could need them, it could be making you a nice side profit--the internet is filled with donation sites, sales sites, and you can even post for stuff that someone else has for stuff you have. The bartering system is alive and well in cyberspace--2 of my favorite sites for this are CRAIGSLIST, and FREECYCLER---Free to post what you have or what you want, amazing place to look for extra income, business contacts, relationships, merchandise, and see what other people want; you never know that old motorcycle under a tarp in your garage may fetch a handsome price and give you space as well as funds to buy the one you have been wanting for the last 6 months in the dealership window. GIVING is fundamental to any success, give to charities, give to your local organizations, give to your churches--money has to be circulated to find its way to where it has to go. Holding on and hoarding stunts that process--let go of the stuff factor and see what comes your way--we are so worried about what we are letting go of we don't see what is coming towards us. Just remember when it comes to being successful the more you can give the more you can get. So in conclusion, DON'T BUY WHAT YOU CAN'T AFFORD and amazingly some of your biggest debts will go away and GIVE---it always comes back to you. Use money as a tool don't let it use you.
